In the village of Potamies Pediados, in Crete a village lost in a sea of vegetation, trees, flowers and picturesque brooks you will come across this ancient greek orthodox monastery, a landmark of history. The monastery dates back to the 9th century. Its name "Gouverniotisa" derives from the word "gouverno" which is venetian for "government" as the monastery was a place of authority. After the 15th century the monastery was abandoned and almost forgotten. It took a handful of dreamers, local people, technicians, architects, engineers, and simple people that took it upon themselves to restore, renovate, recover the history, the frescos, the byzantine icons.
