About 25 - 30 mins over the mountain. College town (my Alma Mater). Very historic and charming! Panning for gold is super fun for the littles, great restaurants and the best fudge at The Fudge Factory.

History buffs should make a beeline to Athens. The city marks the starting point of Georgia's Antebellum Trail, which highlights Civil War-era homes and period architecture in its 17 historic districts. The University of Georgia, the country's first public institution of higher education, is also worth visiting, as it is home to the Georgia Museum of Natural History, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the Georgia Museum of Art. The square in downtown Dahlonega is great for shopping and has many restaurants from which to choose. The University of North Georgia campus is adjacent to the square. There are gold mining tours too!

Dahlonega is a great little college town on top of a mountain about about 45 min from The Great Green Room! Caroline is a little biased because she went to college here. But it offers a great downtown square with great restaurants and you can even go mining for gold as this was one of the earliest towns to find gold in the USA. Some good places to eat are Spirts Tavern, Capers on the Square, and Shenanigans. If you’re traveling during the fall season trying looking up Gold Rush! It’s a huge fall festival and it offers a lot of great vendors and a lot of fun for kids!
