Sacred and special place for the Wiradjuri people. The path has a few roots across it, but is otherwise easy for about 400 metres; then it slopes up steadily to the rock cliffs.

About thirty kilometres north east of Gulgong in New South Wales is a walk to the Hands on the Rock aboriginal ancient site. It’s a bit of a scramble up to the art but well worth it. Suggest take a picnic lunch and do this walk in the morning and then a few hundred metres away on the other side of the road is a beautiful walk into The Drips which would be perfect location for a picnic. Make sure you do both walks.

Hands on Rock is a series of over 100 hand stencils from women and children of the Wiradjuri nation printed on the underside of a large cave. Whilst many of the ochre paintings have sadly faded away, some have survived in remarkably good condition.

These stencils of hands were made by the Wiradjuri people who occupied most of the central west of what is now New South Wales, and were one of the largest Aboriginal language groups. One of its features is the unspoilt fort that surround the area.
