The temple is supposed to be the first Buddhist Stupa in Sri Lanka, believed to be constructed by two seafaring merchants Trapusa and Bahalika.

About 40km away, this is an ancient Buddhist temple and has the first Buddhist Stupa both in Sri Lanka and in the world. It is situated on a small hill which can be reached by a set of steps and a 200 foot climb – and from where beautiful views of the area can be seen
