Those same white quartz dunes are home to a unique coastal ecology known as freshwater dune lakes, which are brimming with aquatic life. Walkers will pass through old-growth pine woods, sandy scrubland, dunes, and wetlands, where they may encounter the Choctawhatchee beach mouse and otherworldly-looking pitcher plants, among the 13 endangered species that have found sanctuary here.
