Easy hike to the WW2 forts that protected invasions over the Coral Sea, and ideal place to spot Koalas in their natural habitat
Take a stroll up the forts walk to see why Maggie island was the first defense for Townsville. Great views, lots of koalas, bats, snakes and other animals. Fantastic landscape photo opportunities.
This walk not only gives you a panoramic view of the island from the Forts but in most cases you can view Koalas in their natural habitat ... the Australian bush! Townsville Council has installed a toilet block at the new carpark at the commencement of the Forts Walk. The Road to Radical Bay has been locked off and cars no longer have access, walking is the only way into Arthur, Florence and Radical Bays.

Check out the army history on the Island - gun emplacements and lookouts are all well signposted. Usually koalas are seen hanging out in the trees beside the track.
This is a wonderful walk through koala territory to the original Forts where you'll see beautiful views over the island. Every time I've been, I've seen koala's in the wild. Fellow walkers will be just as keen to pass on koala spotting information - its always eyes up. Takes about an hour and a half round trip. Take water.
