There is only one sandwich in Regina. It is the platonic ideal of a sandwich, an ur-sandwich, a sandwich to which all other sandwiches aspire. It’s Italian Star Deli’s spicy sandwich on focaccia, with feta. Maybe it could be made without feta, or layers of provolone and deli meat, and maybe there’s a version that isn’t stuffed with banana peppers or hot chili paste, but I don’t want to know about a world where that’s possible. This is the sandwich you wait in line for as the staff assemble it behind the counter, slice by slice.
