On the southern edge of the old quarter, this arched stone gate is the only remnant of the Venetian city wall. It was built in the late 16th century and originally topped with the Venetian emblem – the Lion of St Mark.

What's left of the Venecian walls is the Megali Porta (Porta Guora). It's probably one of the most iconic symbols of Rethymnon along with the Fortezza castle. The arch is a meeting point for local people and it is actually an entry point (one of the many) of the old town where you can find shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. For those that have a more romantic approach to life and with a vivid imagination, you may generate a medieval feeling while going through the gates.

H Big Door or Gate Guora is what remains of the Venetian fortress of Rethymnon. The magnificent gate that has an opening 2.60 m. And was named the Rector Giacomo Guoro was the main entrance of the fortified city and led to the central square where were concentrated the most important public buildings such as the Loggia, the Rimondi Fountain and the Clock Tower .

Porta Guora or Great Gate of Rethymnon. Although much altered down the ages, the Great Gate is still recognizable as the imposing entrance to the fortifications built after the extension of the town, in 1540-1570, based on the plans of Michele Sanmicheli.
