Llyn Tegid

To the south west of the town of Bala, between the Berwyn, Aran and Arenig mountains lies Llyn Tegid, or you may have heard it referred to as Bala Lake. At 4 miles long and up to ¾ of a mile wide it is Wales’ largest natural lake. It is owned and managed by the Snowdonia National Park Authority as a recreational resource, who also protects the lake and its special biodiversity.

The A542 road from Llandegla to Llangollen runs through the pass, reaching a maximum height of 417 metres (1,368 ft). The road travels in a horseshoe shape around the sides of a valley, giving the pass its English name. This route dates from 1811, when a turnpike road was constructed across the area. As with the rest of the roads in the Clwydian Range, it is not uncommon for sheep to gather in the road, sometimes causing problems for drivers. The road is also frequently closed in winter due to snowfall or landslides. The Pass is well known for the Ponderosa cafe at its highest point and the scenic views along the road. Both the cafe and the pass itself are extremely popular with cyclists & motorcyclists. There are many walks and routes in the immediate area that are popular with hikers, and there are a number of campsites nearby.

We highly recommend it. This is one of the most magnificent medieval fortresses in Europe. In the distance rise the craggy mountains of Snowdonia and spread out below you are the harbour and narrow streets of Conwy – still protected by an unbroken 1,400-yard (1.3km) ring of town walls. It’s enough to take the breath away. Especially when you consider that King Edward I and his architect Master James of St George built both castle and walls in a barely believable four years between 1283 and 1287. Conwy takes its place alongside Edward’s other great castles at Beaumaris, Harlech and Caernarfon as a World Heritage Site. This famous fortress is exceptionally well preserved. It contains the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales. The high curtain wall and eight lofty towers rise almost as impressively as when they were built more than 700 years ago.

The cafe has become a significant part of the whole thing and they aim to produce really good home cooked lunches as well as Stephanie's great cakes. They also sell gifts and plants. Caerau Gardens and Cafe is open from Thursdays to Monday’s incl. from 10.00am until 5.00 pm. Dogs are welcome, they have two of our own who will willingly show you around the gardens. There is plenty of space to explore and quite a few unusual plants. Up in the woodland there is a wooden fort and a zip wire.
