Discover Shitamachi, less touristy old Tokyo, incl a drink
Have you ever encountered the term "Shitamachi", while you are planning your stay in Tokyo?
Shitamachi is generally referred to the eastern Tokyo, the delta area in between the Sumida river and the Arakawa river.
We the locals call ourselves "Edokko". Edokko are not rich, not posh, but we believe that we are the ones who built the foundation of Edo (previous Tokyo) and supported its prosperity for over 250 years.
Shitamachi retains many temples and shrines, which host the best festivals in Tokyo.
We will explore the center of Shitamachi, Monzennakacho.
First, we will go to a cafe and the host will give you a short presentation.
HIGHLIGHTS
1. The host's elementary school and the water channels
What is this water and why the school is named xxx?
You will hear about the unique geographical features which generated the Shitamachi economy, and the background of locals’ energetic spirit.
2. The Fudo-son temple
You will learn about the diffent religions in Japan as well as manners to visit temples and shrines. If you are lucky, you will get to see their daily fire ritual.
3. TheTomioka Hachimangu shrine
Some unique simbols are hidden in the emotional center for Edokko.
NIGHT TOURS
Some facilities are closed, but you will get to experience the magical feeling of the shrine with lanterns lit up in the darkness. The price is up but you can choose alcohol at the cafe.
