Sightseeing

A beautiful spa town noted for it’s sulphur river that has healing properties. During the Summer months the outdoor pool is open. Stop for a coffee or lunch in one of the cafes, visit the cave and museum or walk along the right side of the river up to a marble quarry (the footpath goes through a short tunnel - just keep going). The natural water that comes from the stand pipe on the bridge near La Posta restaurant is excellent and pure. E-bikes can be rented from the tourist office (€35/day cash only)

A historic walled city with a famous Medici fountain in its main Piazza. Market day in Tuesday morning with stalls spread around the fountain. Enjoy an afternoon gelato and a walk downwards from the square to the edge of the town for a beautiful view of the valley. Great pizza here too.

Fosdinovo castle is high on a hill and a windy route up there. You can do a tour of the castle which includes echoing galleries and haunted bed (the tour will be given in Italian). There are cafe’s and small winery where you can taste and buy Colli di Luni wines. After a visit to the castle consider driving down the other side of the hill for a visit to the coast and drive back along the autostrada.

Cave del Marmo, Fantiscritti - Miseglia, Carrara (MS) The town of Carrara is rich in history and has an era of importance, with it’s palacial marble buildings and majestic squares. In the hills above the town you can visit one of the largest marble quarrys. Look on TripAdvisor for Jeep tours to Fantiscritti. When you reach the top you can do a tour inside the mountain to the cathedral-like cave—an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world. There’s marble museum and gift shop there too. Take warm clothes as it’s cold inside the mountain.

A small village with a medieval tower accessible by foot from Vezzanello (about 45 mins). Either by walk along the road or via the footpath (you’ll need strong shoes or boots). First walk through the old part of Vezzanello and turn right down the path to Campiglione. Turn right along the road. Where the road splits (left towards Gragnola and right to Cecina) you will see directly ahead a footpath into the woods. It’s marked with a red and white paint mark (the symbol for public footpaths). Follow these markings through the woods and olive groves to Viano. Also note the work of a local eccentric artist near the church. For an alternative walk back, take the road.
