The famous lagoon of Balos is located approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos, formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani and below the range of Platiskinos. During the summer, Balos is visited by thousands of people, who arrive mostly by the ferries running from Kissamos port. The seaside resort of Loutraki is located 16km east of Chania city, quite close to the American military base of Souda. The deepest gorge in Chania is the gorge of Aradaina. The 138 meter deep gorge is ideal not only for sightseeing or hiking but for bunjee jumping as well. It is an original building where today many shops that sell local products and souvenirs are housed. Its foundation started on August 14, 1911, at the place that was the main rampart of the fortification during the Venetian period, and the construction of the building was completed during the second half of 1913.

It was built on the site of a preexisting Christian temple after the conquest of Chania by the Ottomans in 1645, honouring Küçük Hasan Pasha. The mosque bears a large semispherical dome supported by stone arches. The north and west sides house a gallery that is topped by six small domes. This gallery was initially open, as used in the mosques, but in the late 19th century it was closed by arched openings. The mosque houses several art exhibitions during the summer.
