Parks & Nature

Margaret Island is a 2.5 km long island, 500 metres wide, in the middle of the Danube. Mostly covered by landscape parks and being a popular recreational area, it was originally known as Rabbits’ Island in the Middle Ages. Later, it was named after Saint Margaret (1242–1270), the daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary, in the 14th century. Margaret lived in the Dominican convent on the island, which was home to a number of religious cloisters, the remains of which can still be seen today. At the time it was only accessible by boat. There are sports establishments, like the Palatinus water park, the Alfréd Hajós sports pool, a tennis stadium and an athletics centre.

Budapest's Grand Market Hall is the city's largest indoor market. The building was open in 1896 in neogothic style. The cavernous structure was supported by slender steel columns, allowing for extensive sunlight to make its way into the market. The attractive outside facade was by Zsolnay, a Hungarian tile factory. There are three stories of stalls selling a variety of wares. On the ground level, there are lots of fruit and vegetable vendors. In the basement, there's a supermarket, a number of fishmongers, and vendors selling game meat. On the upper floor, beautiful Hungarian arts and crafts are the most common fare but you'll find some fastfood stands there as well.
