Hiking Trails

The Linda Vista Loop Trail is fairly short at only 2.5 miles, but it's a fun, challenging singletrack trail right off of Oracle Road. There's decent parking at the trailhead and signage showing you the layout of the trails. If you're headed in the clockwise direction you'll begin ascending pretty much immediately and go up just over 450 feet, almost all of which is in the first half of the trail. It's also a relatively narrow trail with quite a few tight turns and pretty rocky in most spots. Your outing can be lengthened by doing multiple loops, adding on road miles before/after the trail, or there's also another trail that bisects this loop which can also be added in.

From the trailhead, the trail ascends a V-shaped notch carved along the south face of Pusch Ridge. Views down the canyon get better as you climb, encompassing the city of Tucson as well as distant mountains and valleys. The riparian area on the floor of the canyon provides excellent birdwatching for a wide variety of resident and migratory species that make use of this most productive of all desert habitat types. Other desert creatures you may encounter in this area include javelina and jackrabbits, but the real viewing prize of Pima Canyon, and the entire Pusch Ridge area, are the desert bighorn sheep that maintain a surefooted existence here among rocky crags and rugged canyons.

Mission Garden is a living agricultural museum that interprets 4,000 years of Tucson’s history through heritage fruit-trees, traditional local heirloom crops, and edible native plants. It is a nonprofit, volunteer-run educational organization. It is an important part of Tucson’s UNESCO City of Gastronomy Designation. Four-thousand years of agriculture in this general location were made possible by the Santa Cruz River and its fertile floodplain. Archaeological evidence of plots, fields, irrigation canals, dwellings, and farming villages at this and nearby locations is abundant. Mission Garden sits at the location of gardens that were once adjacent to Mission San Agustin, the Spanish colonial mission founded in 1771. The mission itself and its later-built convento are no longer standing.

Tucson, Arizona is home to the nation's largest cacti. The giant saguaro is the universal symbol of the American west. These majestic plants, found only in a small portion of the United States, are protected by Saguaro National Park, to the east and west of the modern city of Tucson. Unique to the Sonoran Desert, the park’s giant saguaros sometimes reach as high as 50 and can live longer than 200 years. It’s no wonder they’ve been described as the kings of the Sonoran Desert.
