In the small alleyway between Jakobsplatz and Oberanger, right next to the Jewish Museum Munich you can find bronze pebbles embedded into the cobblestones. Between 10a.m. and 5p.m. these "Klangsteine" (sounding stones) emit sounds when you walk or jump on them. Five classic church bells are connected to the bronze stones (which look like pebbles from the Isar river) and you can play them with your feet.

91 meters high up in the dead smack center of Munich with beautiful views all the way to the Alps. If you visit one of the "must-haves", this is it. The breathtaking view is incredible after climbing 300 steps to the top of this historic tower of the oldest church in Munich.

The Hofgarten is a popular destination for Munich residents and tourists. A picnic under the trees, a good book on a bench - or simply soaking up the sun and listening to the fountains. But what hardly anyone knows is that the water from these fountains comes from a dedicated pumping station several meters underground! The plant and the drinking fountain date back to the 16th century! The pump station and the fountains can be visited daily. It is in operation from April to October daily from 10 am to 2 pm.

In the late Gothic vaulted hall of the Burgstock in the Altes Hof, the exhibition "Munich Imperial Castle" provides information about the city's oldest seat of power, about its most prominent landlord, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, and about Munich's urban history. An image-rich multimedia presentation, which runs on the hour, provides a lively introduction to the history and stories of the Altes Hof. Original excavation finds bear witness to the former inhabitants and the way the building was used at the time. The twelve-minute film "Hof und Stadt - Die Entwicklung Münchens unter dem Einfluss des Herrscherhauses Wittelsbach" (Court and City - Munich's Development under the Influence of the House of Wittelsbach) presents Munich's urban history from its beginnings to the end of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1918. Like the multimedia presentation, the film can be played in English. No admission! Open monday - saturday from 10am - 6pm

The (new) botanical garden was created next to the park of Schloss Nymphenburg in 1912/13 and officially opened on 10 May 1914. The garden was designed by Peter Holfelder (1878–1936) who worked closely with Walter Kupper (1874–1953) and Leonhard Dillis (1871–1946). Today the garden cultivates about 19,600 species and subspecies on approximately 18 hectares. Its mission is to provide a beautiful and restful environment as well as educate the public about plants and nature more broadly. Major collections include an alpine garden, an arboretum, rose collections, and a so-called 'systematic garden' in which plants are arranged by taxonomic families. The garden also contains an extensive greenhouse complex (4,500 m² total area in 11 greenhouses), including greenhouses dedicated to bromeliads and aroids Araceae, cacti and succulents, cycads, ferns, orchids, and Mexican plants. The orchid collection includes over 2700 species from 270 genera, as well as hybrids, with special collections of Catasetinae, Cattleya (unifoliates), Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Dracula, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, Pleione, Stanhopeinae, Vanda, and Zygopetalinae. Open daily 9am – 6pm (last admission 5:3pm)

The beautiful little park right next to the Isar River is very well maintained. Originally created to cultivate plants and trees the park was opened to the general public at the end of the 1980s. All the plants and roses are labeled so you can take note of the most beautiful variety to plant at home. Since the entrance to the garden ist quite hidden many pass by and the park therefore is way more idyllic than the banks of Isar. Lots of benches and chairs invite you to linger in peaceful bliss. Open daily from April to September 9am - 9pm and October to March 9am - 6pm No admission fee

Shops

The "Kräuterparadies" (herb paradise) has been selling medicinal herbs and spices in Munich since 1887. You can find more than 150 herbs and even more spices, teas and mixtures in this tiny but packed one of a kind shop. It is still the go to place to get their teas and herbs for the older generation of the locals and a must-see for visitors and the younger generation alike.

For over 125 years, there has been the family business "Holz-Leute" in Munich on the corner of the Viktualienmarkt, directly in the "Metzgerzeile", which was redesigned in 1978. Here you can find the most diverse handmade things made of wood on two floors. The selection of cooking spoons, cutting boards, bowls, pepper mills and bread boxes is incredible but kitchen utensils is not everything they have to offer. From billard cues to brushes. From Backgammon boards to nutcrackers. Whatever can be made from wood can be found in this one of a kind "wood shop".

The Museum Brandhorst is dedicated to contemporary art. Behind the spectacular facade of 36,000 ceramic rods, visitors from all over the world can explore masterpieces of art from the 1960s to the present. Internationally renowned artists and younger voices are united under one roof. The collection and the program of the museum stand for an in-depth research on individual artists and an intensive examination of relevant topics in the visual arts. I highly recommend a visit and especially a guided tour if you can book one ahead of your visit.

Make sure to stop by this hotspot for the street and urban art scene. A private museum founded by husband and wife art enthusiasts, Stephanie and Christian Utz, MUCA sets as its highest maxim the aim to house this young, aspiring movement and to consolidate urban art within the contemporary art discourse. Their exhibitions centre on their in-house collection, which has grown into one of the largest in Europe of this genre. By the way: The MUCA owns the largest Banksy collection in Europe and exhibits over 20 originals of the street artist. Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am - 6pm

Munichs last openly accessible and legal graffiti "Hall of Fame. If you are into graffiti and streetart this is a must-see. You can check out the graffiti paintings and murals 24/7 but I suggest visiting on Saturdays or Sundays as the chance to spot writers and artists painting is bigger on the weekends.

Gastroszene

The Alter Simpl used to be the most famous artists’ pub in Munich and a meeting place for the bohemians of Schwabing. Joachim Ringelnatz, Oskar Maria Graf and Franziska zu Reventlow had their fair share of extravagant nights here. The pub got its name and bulldog logo from the satirical magazine “Simplicissimus”. Icon zur Trennung von Inhalten The charm of the olden days has remained. The walls of the Alter Simpl are covered in photos of Joachim Ringelnatz, Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt, who once stood on stage here. Black-and-white photos show moustachioed men with bow ties raising their glasses, and women in silk blouses and thick checked skirts. Artists like Ludwig Thoma, Oskar Maria Graf, Franz Marc and Franziska zu Reventlow would throw extravagant parties here at the large bar between the dark wood panelling of the walls. Inspiring topics were discussed over a glass of wine or beer like nowhere else in the city. Great food and beer in a authentic location popular with the locals. It might be hard to find a free spot at a table in the evenings.
