Picnic Spot/ Walking

(Actually just over the county border in Hampshire) A lovely New Forest village about 20 mins drive away via Christchurch, with a bike rental centre and wonderful forest walks. Aim for Mill Lane where there is a wonderful picnic spot beside the Mill Lawn Brook with plenty of grazing horses and a clear shallow stream and ford for the children to play. Walks from here are amazing through to Lucy Hill over the heath and through the forest trails. If you want to start a walk by parking at Lucy Hill, you can wander through the ancient forests and across the heathland to Mill Lawn, well away from any crowds and with the cool canopies of the big oak trees. Plenty of free parking at Oakley Hill (opposite Lucy Hill) https://newforestcarparkwalks.wordpress.com/2020/12/06/76-mill-lawn/

(10 mins drive through Christchurch) This is a quiet spot away from the crowds in the heat of the summer and a perfect spot to take a fishing net with children. There are plenty of birds and swans nested in the reeds. Rabbits abound and horses and cattle graze across the marsh. There are small beaches onto the Mudeford estuary. This is a nature reserve with easy parking by the Stanpit Scouts Hall. Great place for a walk and picnic with children and an easy flat amble.

Aim for Swanage town centre and then a steep road runs along the headland up to Durlston Country Park Plenty of parking and acres of walking across the country park with the best crystal blue sea views. Pathway down to The Globe and across to The Lighthouse. https://www.dorsetaonb.org.uk/location/durlston/

Beach Day

Kimmeridge Bay is one of the most interesting Jurassic Coast beaches. It has very steep steps down from a private car park. Fossils are everywhere and it is an exciting place to explore and picnic with children. The slate cliffs are fragile and it is best to sit well away from them, as they are prone to tumble slate. There is a slate and stone bed to the bay and the tide creates lots of interesting rock pooling.

Pretty white shell sand beach with dunes and safe swimming. National Trust parking and shop with public BBQ area. Joins the Sandbanks ferry road or cross by car ferry from Bournemouth and walk the length of the beach round to Studland. One of the best beaches in the UK in my opinion, but gets busy and is better early or late in the day. Weekends at the height of summer can be a long wait for the ferry. The buses do go to the ferry point and you can always go as a foot passenger across the short few hundred feet of harbour water.

Just a short walk along from Boscombe Pier the stretch of beach known as Fishermans Walk begins, altogether quieter and keep walking along this beach until eventually you reach Henistbury Head and the famous Mudeford Spit with the pretty (and expensive) all year beach houses. Bournemouth beach is over 7.5 miles long and starts at Sandbanks (the opening of Poole Harbour) right down to Hengistbury Head. There is a promenade with bike and scooter hire as well as a land train that connects favourite spots and both the bournemouth and Boscombe Piers.
