Batawa Ski Hill

30 Minute Drive: New state-of-the-art snow making technology, Canada’s first LED lights for a ski hill, a new snow grooming cat, and a Leitner-Poma quad chairlift that moves 2,400 people per hour up the hill. Come the warm weather, Batawa Ski Hill has 25 kilometres of trails open up to hikers and bikers. And for young, curious palaeontologists, a 40-foot replica Tyrannosaurus rex is waiting to be discovered in our ever-popular Dino Dig park, the centrepiece of their Summer Adventure Day Camps. Trails & Terrain Park Noted in Ski Canada‘s 2009 annual “Best of” list, Batawa Ski Hill was established in 1959 by the employees of the nearby Bata Shoe Factory. This industrious group set to work on clearing trees, and then installed a handmade rope tow so that they could enjoy everything that this breathtaking landscape offered. Batawa Ski Hill has come a long way since then. This outdoor winter gem now offers 12 runs, from novice to experienced, a gladed run and two terrain parks with assorted rails, boxes, jibs and jumps.

Whether hiking, cycling, horseback riding, canoeing, ATVing or snowmobiling, are your pleasure, we have trails you’ll want to explore. Enjoy the serenity of being at one with nature as you travel through the picturesque township of Madoc. You can also enjoy visiting the historic Marmora Mine. With two thirds of the mine now filled with water, it is the perfect attraction to all sorts of wildlife, bringing out the naturalist in everyone! Lastly make your way over to Stirling to visit the village that was awarded the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2012. With unbelievable community spirit, there are many shops that you’ll want to check out and the folks of Stirling will make you feel right at home. Do all this and more while touring the Central Hastings Heritage Loop.

The open-pit mine measures approximately 1700 feet by 1200 feet and reached 600 feet deep. The mine employed some 300 men who worked to fill the 30 to 35 railway cars, daily, for transport south to Picton port where it was loaded into boats. The mine produced 520,000 tons of pellets annually. When the mine closed in 1979, it had mined almost 1.3 million tons of iron ore. Over time, underground streams and rainfall slowly filled the mine with water. So much so, that it is now officially classified as a lake.

3 min walk. The History of our Library On May 13, 1920, a group of citizens met to discuss the establishment of a public library. This meeting resulted in the formation of a library board of nine members with a yearly membership fee of fifty cents. The library opened on December 11, 1920 with the hours: Tuesday 2 - 6pm and Saturday 2 - 6pm and 7 - 9pm. From this opening of the Marmora Public Library, the ladies of the Marmora Women's Institute were largely responsible for the successful continuance of the facility by conducting membership drives, in the early years, donating furniture, memorial books, and regular financial donations.
