Travel back in time with a wooden train inaugurated in 1912 while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Sierra Norte de Mallorca. The vintage train ride, the so-called Tren de Sóller connects the city of Palma with the beautiful small town of Sóller. The best day to go, probably is on Saturday, as you can combine visiting the weekly market hold in the centre.
The railway, with its original wooden carriages, was built in the early 20th century and it extends over a distance of 27 kilometres, with stops in Son Sardina and Bunyola. You could get off at Bunyola and visit the Tunel factory where Mallorca’s herb-based liqueurs (hierbas) are made.
As it continues crossing the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and winds through orange groves, mountains and the inland areas of the island. Once in Sóller, if you want to, you jump on the “Orange Express” with a tram that connects the town Sóller with Port Sóller, which also is very worthwhile to visit. Both Soller and Port Soller have a variaty of good restaurants and shops.
