Starting as the Castlemaine Woollen Mill in 1875, and finishing as Victoria Carpets in 2013, The Mill has transformed into a place for food and artisan manufacturing, a part of Castlemaine’s vibrancy. You can check out the list of all the businesses located at the Mill here: https://millcastlemaine.com.au/visit-us/onsite/ One of our favourite places at the Mill is Das Kaffeehaus, a Viennese coffee house, the face of Coffee Basics, serving traditional Austrian food, with traditional Viennese flair. Try their freshly roasted coffee, sip on the local and Austrian beers and wines, feast on good, old-fashioned, “like Oma used to cook”, hearty meals and stay for the extensive range of cakes and pastries including of course, the magnificent apfelstrudel – all made in haus daily! https://coffeebasics.com/

City/town information

Only a short 15 minute drive from Muckleford, the town of Maldon is located in a historical gold mining region between the larger centres of Castlemaine and Bendigo. Maldon has been perfectly preserved since its mining days and is Australia's First Notable Town - classified by the National Trust in 1966. Its list of historic buildings is impressive and includes the railway station (built in 1884), the Grand Hotel (1888), the old post office (1870) and a number of churches. Most of the historical buildings of interest are concentrated around the block in the town centre bounded by Main Street, High Street, Camp Street and Church Street. Many of the commercial buildings located along Maldon's streets have been converted into cafes, galleries and antiques shops to cater for the influx of visitors who choose to step back in time by visiting this uniquely preserved historic gold mining town with a streetscape that looks like it hasn't changed for well over a hundred years. Good views of the Maldon township can be enjoyed from Anzac Hill, accessed via Anzac Hill Road south of town. Panoramic views of the surrounding region are best seen from the peak of Mount Tarrengower where there is a lookout tower. Mount Tarrengower rises to a height of 570 metres a few kilometres west of Maldon, and was the centre of gold diggings in the area during the 1850s. Maldon is surrounded by the Maldon Historic Reserve which contains forests and relics of the district's gold mining era. You can also visit Maldon via the Victorian Goldfields Railway – a classic steam train service linking Castlemaine to Maldon - http://www.vgr.com.au/

Castlemaine’s Botanical Gardens are the perfect place for a family picnic, romantic walk around the lake or invigorating morning run. Home to an impressive collection of established native and exotic trees, the gardens are centred on a beautiful ornamental lake surrounded by open landscaped gardens. An award-winning children’s playground offers hours of fun for kids of all ages. Originally contributed to by notable botanist, Baron von Mueller with Philip Doran as the garden's first curator, the gardens feature many trees that are listed by the National Trust. With its monumental pillars, carriage drive and water features, the splendid heritage-listed Castlemaine Botanical Gardens provide a perfect glimpse of a 19th century designed landscape. They also boast one of the oldest known cultivated trees in Victoria - an English Oak planted in 1867 by the Duke of Edinburgh. Stroll around Lake Augusta, take shelter in a rotunda, picnic under the shade of a weeping elm, host a BBQ with friends or cycle slowly along the track enjoying the wildlife. This perfectly verdant setting is often the scene for weddings and family gatherings and is the ideal venue for any gathering. Located conveniently across the road from The Mill complex, you can combine these two attractions for a fun few hours of exploration.
