Sightseeing

Great for all to get some sun, sea and fresh air - this is the main beach and attraction of Broadstairs where most life revolves around. In the summer you'll find the play area for children (and fun loving adults), seasonal lifeguards create a safe environment for everyone, Shaggy and the team at Kent Surf School will look after you if you'd like to give paddle boarding a go, and watch Broadstairs sailing club on race days and regattas. Food is great at the Funicular Cafe, the little ice cream shops, the Pavillion gardens and The Jetty at the end of the pier. All under 10 minutes walk away from Sandy Toes.

If you're lucky you might find Martin working on his mosaics in his workshop up by Bleak House. If you're taking a walk to Stone Bay up the shell-wall passage past the Old Curiosity Shop his workshop is tucked in to the right. And he's usually happy to see visitors who are interested in his process. He makes calendars for the local community each year with his designs and witty poems, and his daughter sometimes makes little glass earrings for sale too. He takes orders for bespoke mosaic pieces and has a flair for sea-themed designs.

Food scene

Famous for it's ice-cream made in-house - but get there in good time as queues can form quickly! We love the retro decor inside, and if you've saved enough room the sundaes are a sweet-toothed dream.

This is one of our favourite stops to watch the world go by at one of the outdoor tables on the high street, or tuck ourselves away inside at one of the cosy farmhouse tables. Perfect for lunch or a sweet treat at the bakery next door. We love a ploughman's here, and tea from the china teapots. Good old English fare!

Classic decent pub food upstairs overlooking the bay, and a well-established bar downstairs that often hosts live entertainment. Popular with the locals and tourists alike and housed right next to Charles Dickens' museum.

Our favourite fancy coffee, typical hipster joint but with good quality menu and ingredients. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and it's a little away from the hustle and bustle of the main promenade if you need to tuck yourself away to get some work done.

Activity

Reasonably priced way to spend a couple of hours, with the added challenge of a free game at the end if you're lucky! Both adults and kids enjoy this, plus there's a cute cafe on-sight to take a breather in the sunshine. Often feels like a quieter nook away from the busy seafront to spend some quality time.

Where Charles Dickens gained inspiration for his novel David Copperfield. The museum is very small with only a couple of rooms to wander through, but you can use your imagination to really feel what it was like. There's also Bleak House up the road where Charles Dickens wrote, it's now a private residence but still has nice views and a link to Broadstairs' smugglers history. A nice injection of culture into your afternoon (often only opens 1-6pm so check website for details).

Harking back to the good ol' days of theatre and film, we love this little 1965 cinema by the well-known York Gate on the hill down to the jetty. Independent, single screen, and mainly shows quirky and independent films.

If you're feeling active then hop onto the Viking Trail that takes you around the whole Isle of Thanet - through Broadstairs and the surrounding towns of Ramsgate, Margate, Minster, Minnis Bay, Pegwell, Kingsgate - in a big loop of 32 miles. But you don't have to do all of it! It's a lovely trail to see the coastline with lots of stops along the way to eat and drink. Artists and writers drew inspiration from the views, and it's steeped in viking, smuggler and roman history. Sightseeing stops include: Mister Abbey Monkton Nature Reserve St Augustines Abbey (Pugin's Victorian Church) Ramsgate Maritime Museum Ramsgate Tunnels King George VI Park with it's 19th Century Italianate Glasshouse Botany Bay's chalk stacks The Turner Contemporary Centre Reculver Church Ruins Visit explkorekent.org for more details and information about bike hire.

Drinks

Surrounded by books on the walls, this is a nice place to grab a drink next to the three closest in proximity pubs in the UK. With a great fish and chip shop just opposite it ticks all the boxes. But, saying that, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to pubs in town - just start at the top of the hill and work your way down to experience all the local characters that Broadstairs has to offer.
