Coffee

Canberra has a few different local coffee roasters, of these Ona and Redbrick are my favourites. Playing fields is around the corner and serves Ona beans. If you like a fruitier flavour, try the Raspberry Candy.

Burgers

Brodburger (locally known as ‘Brod’) has the best burgers in Canberra. They started as a small food van on the lake with queues of up to an hour, but now have many different locations (Kingston, Woden, Fyshwick) and the food comes out faster. They’re not in the city though, so you’ll still need to travel a bit to get them.

If you don't have a car to get to Brod, Betty's Burgers is only 5 minute walk away. This is less of a local Canberra place though as its part of a chain in NSW.

Pizza

Grease Monkeys (or ‘Greaseys’) started as a burger joint, but I really like their pizzas more. Located in Braddon (10-15 min walk), they have a variety of options including gluten free and vegan pizzas on a rectangular detroit style base. They do have a Coeliac friendly fryer for their chips too.

Thai

Kinn Thai (5 minute walk) is my go-to for Thai food, located further down on Bunda st, theres usually a short line out front. I’d book ahead for a table, but normally my friends and I just get takeaway.

If you want something more intimate, then Morks on the Kingston foreshore (10 minute drive) does an amazing tasting menu (or else, try their Angel Prawns) for ~$90 a head. Definitely book ahead for this though.

Modern Australian

Pilot in Ainslie does a fantastic set menu but the menu changes every week. Their wine pairing is good, but it’s the non-alcoholic pairing that has me excited as this is always filled with interesting herbs and flavours from their garden.

Mexican/Fast Food

Guzman Y Gomez (3 minute walk) is an Australian chain who is probably the closest fast food to the apartment. I tend to order from my phone app and by the time I walk there, its generally ready for pickup.

Vietnamese

Bistro Nguyen (12 minute walk) – There are plenty of places to get Phở in the CBD, but I prefer walking a little further to the corner of Northbourne and eat from here.
