It all began in 2002 with the purchase of our Genesee Street location in a relatively economically depressed area of Utica. The potential not only in this location but the whole area was seen by our founder & president, Frank Elias. Another problem solving opportunity was to give folks in the area jobs to get them started and maybe even advance in! In 2005, a roaster was moved into this building with a goal to start sourcing and roasting the world's highest quality coffee. This was transformed over time into a busy and bustling cafe with the vision of partner, Heather Elias.

Zeina’s Cafe, a table-service Lebanese restaurant in Utica knew one thing to be true - that good food is important. They believed that healthy and satisfying should be synonyms in the dictionary. They also believed that the guest experience should be simple yet authentic. After years of cultivating a Lebanese food culture in Utica, they introduce Lafa Mediterranean by Zeina's. A polished and modern fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant with a simple mission - help our citizens live better by creating bold and healthy food that is convenient. We innovated old-world Middle Eastern recipes to curate a menu that is FLAVORFUL, that is LOUD, WHOLESOME and most importantly DELICIOUS. This is food you will love to eat and will make you feel great. Now let’s eat.

Allergy friendly restaurant is to produce products that are so good, you would never know they were allergen free! Although we are primarily Gluten & Dairy Free, the concern for all food allergies & dietary restrictions are at the forefront of our minds. We place a great deal of importance on creating a menu that is suitable for a wide variety of food allergies & restrictions. Offering options for products that are free from eggs, nuts & more. Although our facility does process eggs & tree nuts, (our kitchen is peanut free) we have extensive knowledge of food allergies & cross contamination from many years of personal experience.

Though F.T. Proctor Park is the smallest of Utica's Parks at 62 acres, it is considered the "crown jewel" of the city's parks. It was originally designed by Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architects as a "country" park, renowned for its open vistas and "borrowed views" as seen from its Grand Entrance, Grand Lawn, Ravine, Lower Meadow, and Upper Field. All of these features remain today, thanks to the restoration and preservation undertaken by the Central New York Conservancy and the City of Utica.

The Utica Zoo has served the region for over 100 years. Located in Roscoe-Conkling Park, the zoo is part of a recreational complex made possible by the donation of land from Thomas R. Proctor in 1909. He had a dream that a park could do as much for South Utica as Central Park was doing for New York City. He hired a famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmstead Jr., whose father had designed Central Park, to plan the roads and scenic walkways in Roscoe Conkling Park. The Zoo has grown from its small beginnings with three fallow deer in 1914, to its present collection of over 99 species of animals. Of the 80 acres of land set aside for the zoo’s use, 35 are presently developed. The Zoo property is owned by the City of Utica and until 1964 was operated by the Parks Department. In order to ensure the Utica Zoo’s continued existence, the Utica Zoological Society assumed full management of the zoo in 1964. The first professional zoo director was hired in 1966. One year later, Marlin Perkins officiated at the opening of the Children’ s Zoo. The society was chartered as an educational institution by the New York State Educational Department in 1968. In 1973, the education department was established with the appointment of a curator to carry out its programs. The first building (completed in 1920) is currently named the Wildlife Building and houses the administrative offices, auditorium, reptile exhibits, and the zoo’ s kitchen. In 1981, the Animal Care Center was added to the Wildlife Building for the quarantine and veterinary facilities. The first building made exclusively for animal use was completed in 1927 and still houses the primate collection. Other major exhibits include the Lion exhibit, California sea lion exhibit (finished in 1986), and the Outdoor White-Handed Gibbon Living Rainforest exhibit (opened in 2018). A new Striped Hyena and Mexican Spider Monkey exhibit were completed in the spring of 2020. Utica Zoo is a regional facility and a sparkling gem for the Mohawk Valley. The zoo receives annual support from Oneida County, an unrestricted grant from the Sinnott Family Fund at Fidelity Charitable, and an annual operating grant from the Natural Heritage Trust (a state agency). The remainder of the budget is raised by the Society. Admission fees, society membership, special events such as Wine in the Wilderness, Brewfest, and Spooktacular, the gift shop, the Animal Adoption program, animal encounters, animal feed sales, stroller rentals, pavilion rentals, and donations complete the operating budget income. Major capital improvements are funded through specific fund drives, major grants, and other contributions and sponsorships.

Great Day trip: less than a hour away GREEN LAKES STATE PARK, HIDDEN in the upstate New York town of Fayetteville, boasts a pair of rare lakes with surprisingly tropical blue waters and a remarkable geologic makeup — but that’s not all there is to this wooded parkland. The lakes that give this park its name are of a rare breed: Green Lake and Round Lake are both meromictic lakes, of which there are only about a dozen in the U.S. and just over 50 in the entire world. With many hiking trails.

Utica, the county seat of Oneida County, is situated in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York, approximately midway between Buffalo and New York City. It was originally included in a grant of 22,000 acres made by George II of England to William Cosby and some associates in 1734. The British built Fort Schuyler on it in 1758, but when Fort Stanwix at Rome was renamed for Col. Peter Schuyler, the first Fort Schuyler became known as Old Fort Schuyler. It was abandoned before the Revolutionary War. Settlers began arriving in 1773, and the village became an important stop for settlers heading farther west. The manor was sold by the sheriff in 1792 to a group that included General Philip Schuyler and General John Bradstreet. The new proprietors had the land surveyed and built an inn. In 1798, the name Utica was chosen from names placed in a hat. It is presumed to be in reference to an ancient city of that name in Roman North Africa. The city was incorporated as a village in 1798, the same year that Oneida County was organized. After the Erie Canal arrived in 1825, Utica grew quickly and became a city in 1832. Utica State Hospital for the Insane was established in 1842. It later became known as Utica State Hospital and is currently called the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. Utica College, a private college established by Syracuse University, opened in 1946. Frank W. Woolworth opened his first five and ten cent store in Utica in 1879, but it was a failure. Undeterred, Woolworth opened another store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which was successful. For a long time, Utica led New York in the manufacture of cotton and knitted goods. When textile manufacturers began a gradual shift towards production in the South after World War II, Utica diversified its manufacturing base.
