Sightseeing
Just pop down to the bottom of the village, you can't miss it, some Yew trees at the top of a small hill. If you've never visited the New Forest before, start here. There are usually New Forest ponies grazing. Walk past the hill, past the cricket pitch and if you keep to the ridge line it's the only guaranteed mud free walk in the forest!

The New forest is open plan with grazing rights for animals. This gives the New Forest the lawns and open vistas; but the ponies and deer tend to eat fledgling trees, so there enclosures , fenced areas to keep the deer out and encourage new growth. Pondhead is one of these enclosures, but more than that it is the larged area of coppice on crown land. The hazel has been bought back to coppice rotation by the trust. They then use the coppiced timber to make charcoal.
Don't visit here until you've spent some time in the rest of the New Forest, so you can appriciate how different it is!
