It was estimated there were 60,000 Aboriginals in Victoria in 1840, roughly 1500 were local Dja Dja Wurrung people. Evidence suggested they were a peaceful nation and had peaceful relationships with most of their neighbours. By 1852 the population of the Dja Dja Wurring is estimated to be 142 people.
