Things to do in Ballarat

Sightseeing

In Ballarat, it is customary to 'walk the lake'. Whether it's in your active wear and you're pacing it in less than an hour, or you have the kids in tow and doing it at a much slower speed, walking (or running) the lake is a must-do in Ballarat. The entire trip is a level 6km and there is a lot to see and do on the way around - from the huge adventure playground on the western side, to the abundance of bird life and Ballarat's famous black swans (who literally stop traffic as they carefully cross the road). At the right time of year, you can see ducklings and cygnets, particularly as you weave your way around the little bridges, lagoons and reeds on the western side of the lake. You can also cross the road to check out the Botanic Garden (listed separately) or play the locals' game of choosing which of the beautiful homes that surround the lake they love the best :) There's plenty of rest stops on the way, including Pipers Cafe, The Yachtclub, and The Boatshed Cafe. Locals often like to finish their late arvo lap with a drink at the Lakeview Hotel.

Ballarat's stunning Botanical Gardens are beautiful heritage listed gardens, located across the road from the western edge of Lake Wendouree. They feature a conservatory, the Prime Ministers Avenue ( with a bronze bust of successive Australian Prime Ministers beginning with Sir Edmund Barton's in 1901), fernery, lily pond and a sensory garden.

Ballarat's most famous tourist attraction, and with good reason! Sovereign Hill really does transport you back in time to the town's goldrush days. Always worth a visit and enjoyed by adults just as much as kids!
