A short walk beyond Southerndown beach you will find these beautiful secret gardens. A well kept secret amongst locals-you will often find families and friends enjoying picnics and playing ball games. Well worth the trip-why not take a picnic and stay a few hours.

Well worth a visit to browse the pottery hand made on site, and afterwards, you can pop into the cafe next door for lunch or afternoon tea and a doorstep slice of home baked cake. Large portions of wholesome home cooked food are the signature of this cafe.

Drive through the picturesque village of Merthyr Mawr, listed as one of the most sought after villages to live in in the UK on your way. The dunes is home to The Big Dipper, the second largest dune of its kind in Europe; and regularly hosts running races. In the august bank holiday, there is a festival "Between the Trees' which is well worth a visit-purchase tickets online.

The decor is gorgeous in shades of grey and burnt orange and the fox is high quality at pub prices. Top tip: try the taster menu on wednesdays and thursdays with specially selected wines to go with each delicious course. It also has a nice outdoor area.

Best place to pick up a gift
This is a very well stocked garden centre. It also has a lovely gift shop, a groomers, an aquatic centre, a winery and a cafe serving lunch and doorstep size cakes. Lovely to spend an hour browsing followed by a coffee and cake at Coast cafe.

A great place for walking along the heritage coast path, visiting the walled gardens, and spending the day on the vast beach. There is a shop here selling ice creams and drinks, and a picnic area to sit and eat. This beach is popular with local surfers and on New Year's day, you'll see a large group of locals gathering for a swim to start the New Year off on the right foot.
