Frenchman’s Creek Walk
Here is some of the loveliest scenery in all of Cornwall, it is a walk we do as a family daily when in Helford. It starts and ends in Helford, through the wooded valley signposted to the left of September Cottage. Shortly after entering the wood, look for the path signed to the right to Kestle Barton takes you up through fields and into Kestle Barton, a beautiful gallery and gardens. Cross over the road and follow the Public Footpath sign through the 5 bar gate down through a field and begin your descent to the most famous, yet still one of least known creeks, immortalised by Daphne du Maurier’s book Frenchman’s Creek.
Helford was one of the most important ports in England in the C17th and C18th. There are many tales of smuggling involving the village and the secret inlets along Frenchmans Creek, hidden from view they provided perfect cover. Not only were they used by smugglers but also by local pirates who plundered ships destined for the port in Helford. The Tudor historian Richard Carew wrote that ‘local pirates brought many a ship into the Helford creeks to plunder at leisure’. Its easy to imagine such scenes when walking the creek, its eerie atmosphere is quite captivating. The Shipwrights Arms, with its convenient waterside position, is said to have had extra-thick walls to conceal the contraband - rum, brandy, lace and tobacco from France being the favoured.
At the bottom of the woodland valley you will come to Frenchman’s Pill, it is here that smugglers were rumoured to land their booty. Follow the right hand path alongside the creek. You will see fallen trees and black, seaweed festooned twigs half buried in the mud for decades. When the creek eventually opens out you will see Withan Quay on the far side. After about half a mile the waterside path peters out and you have to take a path to the right up a few steps. Here you have beautiful open views, in strong contrast to the somewhat claustrophobic atmosphere below. Eventually you get to some more steps turn right into the field and walk along the right hand side onto a further field ahead. Cross the cattle-grid and turn left following the sign to Penarvon Cove. Follow the valley down the path to the Cove, from the Cove cross the beach and take the path among the trees beyond the stream. Continue up the hill hugging the coast and turn right along the path behind some houses, you will then find yourself on a lane leading down to Helford, turn left there and right past Popigale Cottage where you will find yourself by the glorious Shipwright’s Arms.
After walking through the village at the top of the hill you will see The Holy Mackerel. It is now a bustling cafe but as you will see it was originally a Church. The Mission Church of St Paul was built at the end of the C19th as a ‘chapel of ease’ to save villagers the long uphill walk to Manaccan, especially in bad weather. In the turret once hung a bell taken from the square rigged ship Bay of Panama after she was wrecked off the coast nearby during bad storms in 1891. The bell now resides in the Manaccan church.

A super beach, lovely and safe for young children. Sailing lessons available and boat hire - canoes and paddle boards. Enjoy walking there from the cottage, turn left at the first cross roads on leaving Helford and walk down to St Anthony, there is a beautiful church on the beach. You can then walk the SW coast path from Dennis Head back to Helford passing the 3 beaches at Bosahan.

A super beach, lovely and safe for young children. Sailing lessons available and boat hire - canoes and paddle boards. Enjoy walking there from the cottage, turn left at the first cross roads on leaving Helford and walk down to St Anthony, there is a beautiful church on the beach. You can then walk the SW coast path from Dennis Head back to Helford passing the 3 beaches at Bosahan.

Regularly featured as one of the most beautiful beaches in England, it will not disappoint. A fairly steep cliffside walk down to the beach, perfectly safe but not for those who do not like heights!

You can take the ferry from Helford Point (by the pub) to Budock Vean for a high tea or a relaxing Spa Day complete with hot tub. The ferry runs at high tide only back and forth across the river to Helford Passage - always check the times before departing, runs from April to October.

The lanes are extremely narrow and windy and often only one car wide. Proceed with caution and be prepared to reverse.
