You don’t need to be a member to use the co-op. Lots of prepared foods, coffee, hot bar, bakery items, bulk items. Tons of gluten-free and vegetarian selections. Lots of gourmet cheeses to choose from. Love their ice cream sandwich selection!

Food scene

McNally’s is a favorite for most locals in Chestnut Hill. It’s pub food on the whole, but it is known for the Schmitter, a hefty meat sandwich named after Mike Schmidt of the Phillies. Afterwards try any of Meg’s cakes. It does have sports playing all the time if you don’t mind that. They are super friendly. They do have an outside, Covid-friendly dining environment.

This is where I go most of the time. I love their cosy bar and other friendly folk at the bar. Their food is very good. I can’t get past ordering their portobello mushroom fries every single time. Many weekends they have live-acoustic music. During Covid, I would call and see if they only have take-out....get the mushroom fries!

Bakery

Baked goods, lunch items and coffee
They are known for their awesome cakes but they also have soup, sandwiches and salads even pizza! Super cute place with outside cafe tables to enjoy your purchases. They serve La Colombe coffee, out of Philadelphia, which is my favorite.

They have amazing bread and scones, but I ALWAYS get the apple fritters. They also have breakfast items, steamed eggs, huevos rancheros etc. Outdoor seating is available.

Sightseeing

It’s really about the location more than the food. I listed this place so you could get down to Forbidden Drive and hike around the Wissahickon Creek. Forbidden Drive is a mostly flat, wide, walking, jogging, biking, strollering trail. Lots of places to stop and enjoy the scenery. There’s a good amount of parking at this entrance to the park.

This cafe is right along Forbidden Drive off Northwestern Ave & Germantown Aves. Plenty of parking. This is the northern most end of Forbidden Drive. This little cafe is just a few steps from the start of the trail. Their hours are brief, in my opinion, but once again it’s really about getting you down to the trail :).

Wine & Spirits

This state run store is at 8705 Germantown Ave. It is hidden behind the Septa bus turn around. If I stood at the corner of Rex and Germantown, I would be giving directions to this store all day long. Meander behind the waterfall statue towards the Thai restaurant and you might find it without asking someone. The Chairman’s selection will usually get you a very nice bottle of wine for a very reasonable price. 215-753-4520 for curbside pickup.....you should ask them what curb they mean, because I’m not sure.

Beautiful neighborhood, but still the city

Lock your car and don’t leave valuables within view. It’s easy to forget you are in the city here. For the most part it is very safe, but be alert.

Walking is the best

Chestnut Hill gets a 69 walking score which actually surprises me because I would have put it easily in the upper 80’s. There is not much you can’t get right here. There are over 50 places to eat and drink within 5 minutes. If you are a hard core walker, you can practically walk to the Philadelphia Art Museum by a foot/bike trail called Forbidden Drive. It’s about 15 miles, but like I said, hardcore.
