Things to Do and See

Entertainment, museums, galleries, sight seeing, etc.
The beautiful restored Perot Theatre, located in downtown Texarkana at 3rd and Main St, has been a landmark since 1924 when it opened as the Saenger Amusement Company's "Gateway to the Southwest" theatre. Fully restored by the City of Texarkana, TX in 1979-80, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Texarkana natives, H. Ross Perot and his sister Bette, through the Perot Foundation, contributed much of the restoration costs in memory of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Gabriel Ross Perot. In recognition of this contribution, the Texarkana, TX City Council renamed the building - The Perot Theatre. The theatre annually hosts the Perot Theatre Series, as well as numerous rentals throughout the year. The Perot Theatre is owned by the City of Texarkana, TX and the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council is contracted to program and manage the theatre.

The Regional Arts Center began life as the first Federal District Courthouse in Texarkana. Construction was started in 1909 but not completed until 1911 since it was in the middle of the "bawdy" district. Workers would do a morning shift, but not return! In 1931, the District Court moved to Sherman. The facility was then donated to Bowie County and became the Bowie County Courthouse in 1933. Following their move to a new courthouse in New Boston, TX, TRAHC has had a lease/purchase agreement with the county since May 30, 1985. Following a capital campaign, renovations on the building were completed at a cost of $1.6 million resulting in the only museum-quality, high security exhibit space between Dallas and Little Rock. Many of the original features were kept including marble floors, vaulted halls; and, although completely re-worked, one of the few brass/copper cage elevators left in the country. The former courtroom was transformed into an elegant rental hall with decorative painting by the same artisans who worked on the Perot Theatre. Other rental spaces for classes, workshops, and meetings are available on all four floors. Additionally, the RAC serves as the administrative offices of TRAHC and houses the ArtsSmart Institute for Learning, ArtsSmart consultants, and the unique Women for the Arts For Arts' Sake Gift Shop.

The Lindsay Railroad Museum has photographic and art displays that cover Texarkana’s 138-year history. Texarkana was founded by the Texas & Pacific Railroad and the Cairo & Fulton Railroad in the winter of 1873-74. In time, Texarkana became the regional hub of nine railroad systems including the Texas & Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and Missouri Pacific. The museum also includes first-person stories about working for the railroads and memorabilia such as uniforms, patches, badges and flags. We have a theater in which to watch films about railroads and a “hands-on” section for children to ring the bells, toot the horns, and experience the thrill of train travel. Come and enjoy the glory days of Texarkana’s railroads!

Photo Op - Federal Courthouse building which was built in 1933 is the second most photographed Federal Courthouse in the entire nation with the Federal Courthouse in Washington DC as the first. And it is the only Federal building in the nation to straddle a state line which means that is serves both Arkansas and Texas but does not technically belong to either state. The Federal Courthouse building contains the post office, two federal courts, the Federal Employees Credit Union, the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the General Services Administration as well as other offices. In fact, their Post Office holds a distinct place in the record books because it is the only Post Office without any home state in the nation.

Built in 1885, this Italianate Victorian home is uniquely designed in the shape of a club because (as legend has it) money to build the house was from the winnings of a poker game with a lucky draw of the ace of clubs. Filled with original furnishings dating from the 1720s to the 1940s from the last occupants of the house, it is regarded as one of the best attractions in the country. "You rarely see a house that is so perfect in every detail and spans the years of a family having the house for 100 years." --Bob Vila, star of TV's hit "Home Again" and "America's Guide to Historic Homes" "The Ace of Clubs House is a real Texarkana treasure." --Stuart Whitehurst, of PBS' hit series "Antiques Roadshow"
