With over 7,000 rose bushes, 700+ varieties spread over more than 4.5 acres, the garden is an international repository. The idea for the garden began In 1917, at time at which Portland already had an enthusiastic group of volunteers and 20 miles (32 km) of rose bordered streets, largely from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition. Jessie Currey, president of Portland's Rose Society at the time, petitioned for the city to serve as a safe haven for hybrid roses grown in Europe during World War I. Rose lovers feared that these unique plants could be destroyed as a result of the war. Foreign hybridists sent roses for test from many countries and the garden was an immediate success. Today, Portland is the only North American city that can issue its awards to roses of merit throughout the world.

Silver Falls State Park includes the Trail of Ten Falls Loop, an amazing trail. Silver Falls State Park is the crown jewel of the Oregon State Parks system, being both Oregon's largest State Park (9,000 acres) and boasting one of America's most impressive waterfall day-hikes. There are no less than ten falls on this 8.7-mile loop (which can be reduced via two cutoff trails), and most of them are flat-out gorgeous. Unfortunately, while the hike is not very strenuous (most folks will handle the rolling elevation, with about 1,300 feet of total accumulation, in three to five hours), dogs are not allowed on the Canyon Trail portion of the hike -- which is where the waterfalls are found. Unless it's a foul-weather day in the middle of a week in winter, count on seeing plenty of other visitors on the trail. A quick Google search ("Trail of Ten Falls Loop") will give you all the details you need to find the trail head.

Dog Mountain is a popular hike due to its easy access in the Gorge, beautiful views, and relatively short distance. Don't let the distance and low elevation fool you, however, the trails are very steep and will require some fitness and perseverance. This loop is known for prime wildflower viewing in May and June, but hikes in the summer and fall are rewarding as well. For a moderate hike, you can walk 1.5 miles up to the lower viewpoint. For the more difficult hike detailed here, go all the way to the summit and loop back down. It is even possible to continue to Augspurger Mountain from this area. This hike is extremely popular and the parking area fills early. To avoid frustration, try to arrive before 8:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. between March and October.

This is an odd one, and not for everyone, but Sunday nights' Stripperoake at Devil's Point (a strip club) is a Portland institution. Around 9.30 pm the patrons share the stage with some of Portland's finest dancers to sing their favorite songs Karaoke style. The dancing is topless, and the crowd is usually an equal mix of men and women. Please check out the Yelp reviews to see if this local speciality is up your alley.

Food Scene

The kitchen is tightly focused on a few items that they can do very well; simple preparations and combinations, heightened with an unusual ingredient here and there. Almost everything is cooked in the wood fired oven. A charcuterie board is always on the menu, paired with a dense bread, terrific house-pickled cucumbers, mushrooms and celery. The craft cocktails are top notch. Try the cookie and milk for dessert. Expect to spend around $35 per person exclusive of drinks and tip.

It's unadvertised. It's unmarked. It's cash only (and no ATM). The service is spotty, and the menu limited to beverages and dessert. And they periodically give themselves a 20% "service fee" in lieu of tips. It opens around 7 p.m. and stays open to around midnight.... it remains an icon of "Old Portland" and worth a stop.

World famous Thai street food joint. There are often long lines, but they recently changed their hours to be open from lunch to late. So come off hours. At 4 pm there is usually no wait, even on weekends. If you do encounter a wait, you can go across the street to Whiskey Soda Lounge, a whiskey connoisseur's dream that features Pok Pok appetizers. Or grab a latte at Dapper & Wise on the corner of Division and SE 32nd.

Farm Spirit is an amazing place. All guests arrive together and sit at an extended counter for a 9 to 12 course prix-fixed menu. The cuisine is molecular gastronomy influenced, seasonal and local. Oh, btw, it's also vegitarian, but you'll hardly notice, given the complex and distinct flavors. Reservations are required, and you pay for your meal when you make your reservation. Total cost, including tip, is $72 to $95 per person plus alcohol.

A locals favorite, the 4T trail is unique and is walking distance from the house. 4T (trail, tram, trolley and train) will take you on a tour of the city, including a moderate hike (4.5 miles, significant elevation). See details here: http://www.oregonmetro.gov/sites/default/files/walk_there_portland_4T_trail.pdf Note, the aerial tram is free going down, so going counter clockwise is the least expensive way to do this fun experience.

Are you a Portlandia fan, here are some places featured in the show: The Feminist Book Store is called "In Other Words"... It exists, and it's pretty much like you see on the show... Land Gallery is where the “Put a Bird on It” was filmed, and props from the show are still on display. White Stag Sign can be seen by driving over the Burnside Bridge from east to west. Paxton Gate is the taxidermy shop featured in several episodes. Visit Olympia Provisions, which was featured several times in the show, including during the "Dream of the 1890's" episode (remember the "Meat" sign!). Voodoo Donuts is often featured, and a frequent tourist destination. The tiny house is easily found with a Google search (hint: the owners are Lina and John). And you can search Youtube for "Kumail Tours Portlandia" for visits to the feminist book store, vegan strip club, the feminist bookstore and more.
