When it opened last December, this non-stop pizza party – with all the garlic bread and disco balls that entails – was at the crest of a wave of new Italian openings in Carlton. Leonardo’s stands out though, thanks to its emphasis on quality ingredients and fun-times, all wrapped up in a nostalgic ’70s wood-panelled space. And judging by the queues that spill out onto Grattan Street almost every night, everyone still wants a piece of the party.

Bar Holiday is a small bar in Carlton, opened by copywriter turned first time restauranteur, Matthew Hurst. It’s located on Lincoln Square, in the heart of the Melbourne’s university district, facing onto the park. Super cute, super cool.

Quirky Wolf’s Lair is hidden inside Carlton institution Jimmy Watson’s. European curios decorate the walls of the cosy downstairs bar. Upstairs there are treetop views from picnic tables. No wonder it’s known as Carlton’s Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Great place for a drink in winter.
