Celebrated as the only completely walled city in Ireland, the walls are a huge part of understanding the city’s history. Constructed between 1613-18 on the ancient island of Doire (the original name for the city in Irish, pronounced ‘duh-ruh’, meaning ‘oak grove’), they were funded by the Companies of London, and changed the official name of the city to Londonderry. They were erected to protect the loyal British subjects relocated from Scotland & England from the native Irish population who were forced off their homeland during the Ulster Plantation.

Food scene

Located inside the old army barracks in Ebrington Square, this is an award-winning brewery which serves delicious food, although a little pricey. Great staff, expansive menu and always impresses anyone we take here.
