Buurten

The best-known street in the Zurenborg district is the Cogels-Osylei, in the Berchem area, which is well known for its art-nouveau architecture. The most important square in the centre of the district is the Dageraadplaats, almost completely surrounded by cafés and restaurants and on sunny days forms one big terrace!

The southern district in Antwerp is usually called Het Zuid (or in short: 't Zuid). Because of the many bars, restaurants and cafés, it is known as a trendy neighbourhood. The district owes its name to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (Mukha) and the Photography Museum. In addition, the new courthouse, the Zuiderpershuis, the Sint-Michiel and Sint-Petrus churches and the modernist Sint-Walburgis church are located here. There are also many large stately mansions and graceful art nouveau houses in the district. Definitely have a drink at Marnix plaats :)

Het Eilandje ("the island") has not stolen its name: Antwerp's oldest port area is surrounded by water. Today, port activity is more concentrated in the north, but the port feeling still prevails here. Taste the old atmosphere of the unloading quay with monumental warehouses, lanterns, hangars and cobblestones. Thanks to three crowd-pullers, the MAS | Museum aan de Stroom, the Red Star Line Museum (really worth a visit) and the Port House, the link between the city and the water is underlined once more.

The immensely beautiful Rococo buildings on the Meir house major European chain stores. It makes this traffic-free boulevard the pre-eminent hotspot for every shopaholic. Meir hosts the bigger-brands stores, try some streets with local and smaller fashion shops nearby : kammenstraat, nationalestraat, Korte Gasthuisstraat, Wiegstraat and Lombardenvest.

The old city centre is steeped in history. You will find it in ancient building-fronts on narrow streets or in the imposing Grand-Place. The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the only museum in the world to be classified as a Unesco World Heritage site. In the shadow of the Cathedral of Our Lady, the city teems with life in intimate pubs and restaurants. The banks of the Scheldt are a great place for a breath of fresh air.
