Sightseeing

I have spent many hours as a child, and my kids have had heaps of fun at Tahunanui Beach. Take the buckets, spade, and boogie board (under the house or in the shed) and have hours of fun swimming and making sandcastles. There is a fantastic kids' playground by the beach too. Top tip: Pack for the day, water, sunscreen, and food. There is so much to do around Tahunanui Beach you can spend the whole day there.

Golden sand and clear water are a must-do; it's 46km away, taking you 42 minutes driving. Top tip: when you are on your way back to our place, stop for a real fruit ice cream (with a cherry on top!) at Thomas Brothers Cherry and Real fruit Ice Cream Stall. Hop Federation Brewery across the road from the ice cream shop if you are into craft beer.

• Middle of New Zealand – Hardy St Nelson (16km) Yes, the middle of New Zealand is in Nelson. Go to the Botanicas Reserve at the end of Hardy St. The start of the Maitai Walkway is at the far end of the reserve. It will take about 20 – 40 minutes to walk the track, which is uphill. The views are stunning, and there is a needlepoint showing you the exact spot in the middle of New Zealand. Top tip: Take water with you by the top of the hill; you will need water. A useful fact is that the reserve at the bottom of the track is where the first game of rugby was played in New Zealand.

Finding a good Fish and Chip shop for a quick dinner when you are on holiday is a must. The locals recommend it to us and when we holiday in Richmond this is where we go. If you like a corn pattie these are amazing. They also do Gluten Free.
