Walk where dinosaurs roamed. You can actually place your feet in the ancient footprints of dinosaurs by the beach at Salema. A small fishing village, Salema is loved for it’s laid back and relaxed vibe, unpretentious charm and fabulous beach. The footprints are at the Western tip of the beach on rock outcrops and are best viewed from the staircase above the beach and at low tide.

Overlooking some of the Algarve’s most dramatic scenery, the small, elongated village of Sagres has an end-of-the-world feel, with its sea-carved cliffs high above the frothing ocean strung with wind-whipped fortresses that connect it to Portugal’s rich nautical past. It's the only place in the world where white storks are known to nest on cliff faces.

Aljezur is defined by its charming rural architecture, whitewashed buildings with coloured windows, castles atop of hills, old churches, and scenic views of the sea. The town, set along a narrow river, is split into two halves – the western Moorish section, and the eastern section, defined largely by the hilltop castle and New Churches on corresponding ends.

As tourist towns go, Lagos (lah-goosh) has got the lot. The port town, which launched many naval excursions during Portugal’s extraordinary Age of Discovery, lies along the bank of the Rio Bensafrim. Its old town's pretty, cobbled lanes and picturesque squares and churches are enclosed by 16th-century walls. Beyond the walls is a modern but not overly unattractive sprawl and some truly fabulous beaches.
