UQ is the place to be. The art and anthropology museums are open to the public. Taking ferry to the City from there would give you a wonderful river tour as a local person.

Only 10-min drive and 15 by a direct bus from our house. You could actually hug and hold a Koala. Feed kangaroos? no problem at all! We also love to picnic there as well as the parks near the river.
