It is not very well known that Goa is home to many prominent and ancient temples like the Mangeshi Temple. Before the Portuguese came, Goa was home to Saraswat Brahmins and the temples of their deities. As Portuguese took over and started pushing religious conversions, some percentage of the population converted while the others moved to areas that were yet to come under Portuguese. When the moved they took their deities along with them. This is how most temples today are found in the Ponda district of Goa. That came under Portuguese much later. And by then they had become more accepting of the other religions.

If any place can rightly claim to be the first place where the beloved Goddess Shri Mahalasa Narayani came to Goa, then it is Varenyapur, now known as Verna, in the southern part of the scenic coastal state of Goa. For centuries, there existed a temple dedicated to the Goddess, the female form of Lord Vishnu also known as Mohini, until it was razed to the ground by the Portuguese invaders in the year 1567 AD. History says that many of Her devotees and Kulavis took away Her idol and established it in a new temple at Mardol to escape the persecution by the Christian crusaders. The temple at Mardol today is the focal point for Shri Mahalasa Narayani in Goa. However, Shri Mahalasa Narayani desired the temple at Her original place be reconstructed and a dedicated band of devotees devoted their time and efforts towards the same mission; and today there stands a grand temple in proud testimony to their efforts, of course, with Her blessings.

The temple is built in the Kadamba style from basalt, carried across the mountains from the Deccan plateau and carved by craftsmen. It is considered to be the only specimen of Kadamba architecture in basalt stone preserved and available in Goa. The temple survived untouched due to its remote location in a clearing deep in the forest at the foot of the Western Ghats which surround the site.

This church is among the best churches to see in North Goa. It has a breathtaking gothic architecture and has ornate interiors. Its magnificent structure, with numerous spires, gilded altars and ornate interiors reminds us of a medieval castle and its white exterior dazzles in daylight. In the evenings though, the church is illuminated with lighting, making it a marvellous sight to behold.
