Sightseeing

Hiking, nice sites, some allow dogs
3rd oldest tree in florida, it's massive, surrounded by a ~3 acre open field, great for letting your dog stretch his legs. Take the 1.5 mile thru thick woods and bramble, or take your care 'around the block' to see this beauty

Great trails, nice and wide for dogs. at the Trail head is a nice swimming area (but not clear) and an historic camp with many beautiful wood buildings built by CCC during the Great Depression. (including a beautiful foot bridge, still sturdy and strong, and lots of fun to walk on) aka- River Sink River Rise, the river goes under ground at the end , and comes up again about 1 mile away in River Rise park

Not much in town, but several spots in the area are worth the short drive. Devil Springs- geared mostly for Cave divers, snorkelers Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens, arboretum and garden built around an old quarry. Occasional live music acts in evening. Red White and Blue Blueberry farm...pick your own BB and peaches, and DO NOT miss the blueberry milk shakes and ice cream. They have a live music schedule, i think on weekend afternoons

Excellent kayaking and swimming, enter in State Park spring head or in the 'neighborhood feel' KP Swimming hole about 2 miles south. Dogs allowed on Kayaks which are rentable from either entrance. Crystal Clear end of the river, easy paddle with nature and nice houses along the way. (about 70 miles from here)

Great Beach, with lots of space, beautiful clear water, nice sand beach, some waves.... St Augustine town only minutes away, great sightseeing and Eats (even before you reach the Lion Bridge) Dog friendly beach and town...hard to park on weekends during the season (winter and summer) about 75 minutes to the East of here note to the wise: next county south is the shark capital of the east coast

Nice quaint old fishing town with NO crowds (unless you go for a festival there), only a few passable restaurants, some nice artist shops and gift shops. nice clapboard homes and an historic homestead nearby. (also noted for it's reknowned Pencil production) Beaches are not great, but no waves... about 70 miles west of here. Goethe State forest (another old old Florida tree easily accessible from parking area) and what is left of the town of Rosewood (see it's WP entry for another dark chapter of what man is capable of doing to man ) along the way. Not too many great swimming beaches on the west coast, this far north.

Trails and Dog runs

Millpond about 10 minutes away has a 1.5 mile trail and a 4 mile longer trail. There is a dog park in Gainesville, about 10 minutes away, but we do not recommend any dog parks. Otherwise, look at our individual entries, some allow dogs, some have limited access and others are NOT good for pets (such as Paynes Prairie- La Chua)
