Food scene

Ive tried not to give you too many options in the food section. The ones Ive recommended will not disappoint- and thats more important than having heaps to choose from - I think anyway. i know the waterfront has plenty of eateries - but I have to be honest - Id go to the Waterfront for the vibe and the views - but eat back in Geelong West or the city Dining Precinct in Little Malop Street. For vegetarians, you dont need to worry - all these cafes have wonderful vegetarian options.
This is a restaurant rather than a cafe - perfect for lunch or dinner. You will pay more than cafe prices here - but it’s worth it.the menu is based on share plates and the food and service is delightful. plenty of vegetarian options offered. There are around 10 indoor tables and more in the alfresco area with a fire pit. If you are guests at Saint Brides - simply take a stroll in the direction of the city, through Johnsons Park - and you are there. If you are guests at Castlebar Cottage, you may prefer to take a car.

Winters Cafe has a great menu and really pleasant service. You will need to drive a couple of kilometres down Pakington Street to get here. Perfect for brunch or lunch. Im not vegetarian but the falafels are the best Ive ever had. When you book, make sure you ask for a table downstairs - and if its cold or windy - ask for a table down the back. Good coffee.

I love the menu here. Really tasty.Great vibe - and really pleasant service. My favs here are the Mexican Bowl and the Eggplant Shakshouka Eggs. Its tucked around in Preston Street. I didnt know it was there for a long time - so glad I found it. Many of the tables are semi alfresco but there are a few tucked away inside. The Box Office is open 7 days early till late - 11pm Wednesdays thru Sunday - unfortunately they dont take bookings.

This cafe offers authentic home made European fare. Perfect comfort food for cold Winter days - but make sure you book a table down the back - away from the front door - the wind is cold when the door opens. My favourite is the cabbage rolls with potato mash and gravy - so good! The Dutch pancakes and desserts are perfect for sharing and a must try.

So you’re starving and it 3pm- kitchens everywhere are closed - this is where you go. Delicious, high quality food - pretty much all day everyday - and that’s a rare find. Opens at 9am on the weekends and 11am on week days. If you are a group of 4-6 ask for booth 19 or if its just for 2 ask for booth a booth along the wall - it’s cosy. Love the crisp Atlantic Salmon with chat potatoes and the Tiramisu. Their pizzas are soooo good. Nothing like Dominos! Fresh dough made everyday while you watch and just the perfect edit of toppings - never too many - baked in a domed pizza oven.

Although the menu here is pretty much Asian style Pho soup - it is delicious, healthy, inexpensive and satisfying. Their slow cooked broth is layered with meat, fish, tofu or veg and then laced with rice noodles and fresh herbs and greens. The venue is semi alfresco but the drop down clear blinds provide good shelter.

The Telegraph Hotel is a great option for families staying at Castlebar Cottage as it’s a quick walk after you turn right into Pakington Street. It offers relaxed and very comfortable dining - and really good sized meals! Enjoy the warmth of multiple open fire places and tasteful decor. They have both a lunch and dinner menu - and their Italian dishes are very good.

If you fancy a short 10 minute drive to a winery/ restaurant tucked away in a more rural setting to experience exceptional food and award winning wines - this is the place. Sheltered alfresco eating or tables inside the beautifully preserved and renovated old mill building. Their menus are set but they cater for allergies and preferences. Prices are in line with their quality.
