An enormous oval castle, mostly surrounded by a serene mill pond. Extensively restored in Victorian times, it's dominated by the complex gatehouse on the outside and the huge circular keep once you're inside. The walled town of Pembroke which grew up around the castle also contains many ancient and interesting Norman buildings. Facilities: Shop, a brass rubbing centre and café. Park next to the Tourist Information Centre on The Common. There is a train station in Pembroke at the far end of Main Street.

Perched on the clifftop, the Deer Park was once home to an Iron Age settlement. Now it’s the ultimate vantage point for spotting seals in the bays below and unearthing historic finds. You can actually still walk up through the ramparts of the Deer Park’s Iron Age fort. It dates back more than 2,000 years and is the largest promontory fort in South Wales. With its towering coastal location, it’s easy to see how the fort was so well defended. Despite its name, you won’t find any deer here. The name itself relates to a failed attempt to establish a deer park in the late 18th to early 19th century. Instead, look out for seals and birds; they’re aplenty in these parts. You’ll spot Atlantic grey seals and their pups on the shore in late summer and several pairs of chough are known to breed in the area too. The site comprises of coastal heathland, a windswept strip of colour and wilderness that’s shaped by nature. To keep the habitat in tip-top condition, you’ll also see Welsh mountain ponies grazing here.

The Preseli Mountains, or Preseli Hills, whichever you prefer, rise out of the landscape to 536m in the northern half of Pembrokeshire and are in complete contrast to the relative lowlands of the south. The landscape is wild moorland, heath and grassland and is home to a wide range of plants and invertebrates some of them quite rare. The hills are the ideal location for some great walking away from the coastline. For the best views in Pembrokeshire, pull on your sturdy shoes and take the short walk to Foel Eryr where the 360-degree panorama leads the eye across the sea to Ireland and Snowdonia, if it’s a clear day.

Saundersfoot is a small seaside resort between Tenby and Amroth on the South Pembrokeshire coast. Much more compact than Tenby with a charm and character of its own, Saundersfoot was designated a Conservation Area by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in 1995. Saundersfoot harbour was originally a coal port for the mines at Stepaside. Nothing remains of the mines but the old tramway route survives as a fascinating section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Eat in Coast, the St. Brides Hotel and Spa or the Boathouse.
