Towering above the rolling foothills of Guatape lies the soaring monument of La Piedra del Peñol also known as “The Big Rock.”

Towering above the rolling foothills of Guatape lies the soaring monument of La Piedra del Peñol also known as “The Big Rock.”
Coined by many Colombian locals as the “The Best View In The World” it’s not hard to see how La Piedra del Peñol gained its fame.
At its highest point on the south side of “The Rock”, La Piedra stands at a whopping 721 feet tall providing anyone who dares to climb it unbeatable panoramic views over all of Guatape.
On one side you will witness the mesmerizing landscape of Guatape, while on the other you see the equally as beautiful lands of Peñol.
Tip
-At the top are several stores located at the summit serving a variety of snacks and beverages.

Nestled around the lake is the lively town of Guatape where every home is carefully painted with themed placard borders called Zocalos. Each house and business has a theme to their zocalo – some themes are about what they do (like the hardware store, or the milk farmer). Other themes showcase the family dog of the home, or odes to Pink Panther, Minnie Mouse, or a tribute to the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Visitors may see peace doves or renditions of the La Piedra del Peñol. If you like to wander, you can spend hours discovering the zocalos by sauntering through the cobblestone streets through the town.

San Rafael has some of the most gorgeous crystal clear rivers in Colombia. One of the best aspects of this trip is the journey itself. Rent a mountain bike, a motorcycle, or a scooter so you have a chance to stop and admire the breathtaking scenery along the way.
This small town features everything from beaches and waterfalls to monkeys and jungles!
El Chispero (The Bubbles) – a nature reserve with a waterfall with opportunities to jump into the water below from the waterfall.
Los Patios – an area with three waterfalls.
Pasitos (Little Steps) – a natural waterfall with the appearance of child’s footsteps.
Cajones (Drawers) – a secluded space under the forest canopy with crystal clear water that is good for swimming.
La Planta – a small beach area along the Rio San Carlos river that is normally quiet during the week but will normally have many locals and Colombian tourists on the weekends.

The city of Guatape offers eternal springtime weather and temperatures here are usually warm days and chilly nights.
This area usually encounters strong rain showers mostly at night, and last for a short period of time.
The busiest season is in December until January 15th.
