Best Piri Piri Chicken in town!
If you're after an authentic Portuguese BBQ experience, go here. Only open for lunchtime 12-5. Choose your fish or meat from the display on the way in, join the queue and then have it served to you at your bench seat. Not cordon bleu, by any means, and service is rough and ready, but if you like charcoal grilled to perfection food, served with salads, beautiful potatoes with garlic oil, all for a surprisingly low price, then you’ll love this. Be prepared - it's very popular so there's often quite a long wait to be seated.

Beaches

Beautiful beach on the wilder, quieter west coast, about 40 minutes drive from the apartment. We often take charcoal and a grill and have a relaxing sunset bbq here. There tend to be waves here if you enjoy surfing or just a splash around in the waves.

This is the closest beach to the apartment. It is very long and sandy. Even on busy high season days you can always find a spot somewhere here. Walk away from town to find the quieter end of the beach. In summer months there are usually no waves or small waves so it's good for those who fancy a swim but are a little nervous. Grab a bola de berlim (doughnut) from the vendors that walk along the beach calling out for custom. You can walk there less than 15 minutes if you take the most direct route: from the end of our road, turn right, walk about 10 metres then take a sharp left turn. Walk along this road until you see a dark yellow villa on your right, take a right turn and walk down the right side of the villa, past "Inn Seventies" guesthouse, down the path through the scrubland. Go straight across at the roundabout, keeping the pink Vila Gale hotel on your right. Meia Praia is straight ahead of you across the train tracks & sand dunes. Note that in July and August it tends to be very windy in the afternoons, so it’s better to go to Meia Praia in the morning & choose a more sheltered beach such as Porto de Mos for the afternoon.

Get lost in Lagos old town

Take a wander through the narrow cobbled streets of Lagos's historical centre. Mooch around the little shops or enjoy a bica (espresso), pastel de nata (custard tart) & some people-watching in one of the many restaurants or cafes.

Explore the sea - grotto kayaking and dolphin spotting

If you fancy an active and scenic trip, it’s worth considering one of the many kayak tours that take you around the cliffs and grottos of Lagos. There are several companies operating from Batata beach & stalls at Lagos marina offering information. For a less active sea experience, the “Tornado” boat offers dolphin watching trips which are also fun. Note that it is sometimes cheaper to book trips online as the stalls charge usually add a commission.
