An outstanding cottage on one of Scotland's most attractive and important historic sites. Dunadd Fort is where ancient kings were anointed and is widely regarded as the birthplace of Scotland. Our spacious family holiday home offers comfort and tranquillity whilst only a 5 minute drive from the market town Lochgilphead. Perfectly situated for exploring Argyll and the islands, as well as offering magnificent walking, cycling, fishing, bird watching, sea cruises, and much more on our doorstep.
Dunadd Fort provides 360 degree panoramic views over the sea to the Isles of Jura and Islay, across the Moine Mhor nature reserve to the picturesque Crinan Canal, towards the Neolithic sites in Kilmartin Glen, and East over the River Add. Our cottage is a spacious family holiday home on a natural terrace halfway up the fort. The cottage has been comprehensively refurbished to give you a restful, and relaxing holiday experience. The bedrooms have new luxury mattresses, linen, and carpets. All the bedrooms enjoy magnificent views over the River Add. Both the family bathroom and shower room are new.
We love how much communal space the cottage has. The large antique oak dining table easily accommodates the 6 foot table-top snooker table, there is a childrens' snug at the top of the stairs, and in the sitting room you can sit cosily by the fire or fall back into the sofas and surf the interactive tv.
The kitchen is well equipped, including a large fridge / freezer, dishwasher, and microwave. The utility room has a washing machine and pulley clothes drier.
A south facing terrace is accessed through the sitting room french windows and provides the perfect spot for lazy afternoons and evening drinks. And the well maintained 3/4 acre garden provides ample space for energetic children to play to their heart's content.
For guests who are interested in the past, Dunadd Fort features in many television programmes. Our particular favourite is the BBC's "History of Scotland" in which Neil Oliver reveals Dunadd's beauty and majestic pedigree. (episode 1 - available on YouTube -10 minutes in). Well worth a look.
Dunadd Fort is a focal point for the Kilmartin Glen network of walks. which offer a choice of river, woodland, and hill walking. You will find route plans for 22 nearby walks in the cottage. These varied habitats, along with our nearness to the Crinan Moss nature reserve and sea, make the area rich in birdlife. Guests may even be lucky enough to catch sight of the locally nesting golden eagles.
Guests can choose from a wide variety of excellent local restaurants, many specializing in the West Coast's bountiful local produce.
We've always found Dunadd Fort Cottage has the ingredients for perfect Scottish holidays. The cottage is spacious and combines the character of a 200 year old house with up to date comfort. It enjoys the peace of a secluded location with proximity to activities, shops and restaurants.
Sea cruises, horse riding, and Lochgilphead swimming pool are all within a 5 minute drive. As are supermarkets, and restaurants to suit all budgets.
Dunadd Fort is at the heart of this amazing part of Argyll. Car ferry terminals for day trips to the Western Isles are within an hours drive. Though many people prefer the thrill of the fast passenger service which leaves Tavyallich for the Isle of Jura, and which arrives a stones throw from it's famous whisky distillery (booking required). Tavyallich is just a 15 minute drive from Dunadd and is beautiful enough to merit a trip in its own right.
We are well placed as a base from which to explore the area by bicycle, with untold miles of forestry tracks available for those who prefer off-roading. The cottage has a lockable garage for bike storage.
Fishing permits are available for the River Add and local lochs.
