In the very heart of Castelnuovo Nigra is located our cosy flat in a cottage of the roaring 70ies: you will spend a pleasant holiday among the Alps and at the same time a travel into history! We just totally renewed in line with the Italian design of the years: enjoy the Music Sitting Room inspired by the Age of Aquarius and our modern kitchen & dining area; relax in the quiet beedroom; HiFi of the 70ies, TV and broadband WiFi are available
We renewed our apartment having in mind the leitmotif of the Age of Aquarius: solidarity, democracy, brotherhood, a new lifestyle which could be respectful of the environment, of people and other living creatures, open to new technologies and to humanitarism.
Castelnuovo Nigra, a romantic mountain village made of stone and wood, beautifully featured by the stone roofs in “lose” the local flat stones, is the ideal scenario for a pleasant and relaxing holiday among gorgeous mountain landscapes and far from the crowd.
The house was built in 1969 by my parents according to those years’ favourite design: wood and stoner externally, piemontese “graniglia” marble tiles and pinewood doors and windows in the interiors. We selected the best of modern life to make your stay confortable: high speed broadband WiFi, a modern kitchen, satellite TV; further to that we added the furniture and our collection of electrical equipments and other vintage items belonging to the 60ies and 70ies. You will find a nice HiFi and our vinile disks collection which will be part of your relaxing moments in our “music sitting room”; you’ll enjoy our yellow sofa and the famous Amanta armchairs designed by Mario Bellini, a real design landmark of the 70ies.
The brand new bathroom is featured by Made in Italy items. Two artisans working in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, created for us the Dolphin mosaic to make our bathroom unique: the subject is a lovely example of a magnificent Pompeian mosaic representing marine subjects. The dolphin among the waves is one of the most fascinating creatures inhabiting the sea, we loved to have it as our symbol, suggesting cheerfulness, harmony and beauty thanks to his graceful movements.
Our bedroom is silent and confortable, we selected a soft wallpaper in light blue and beige with the typical optical design which was fashionable in the 70ies. From the open door you will have a nice view of the flat and, in winter time, of the lively flame glazing in the pellet stove which is keeping the flat warm. The dining area offer a nice view in the main historical road of our village and on the beautiful gardens around: in spring and summer plenty of roses and jasmine plants will create a magnificent view and delicious perfume while you are confortably sitting around the dining table in cristal and steel.
Castelnuovo Nigra is the most beautiful village in the entire Valle Sacra (Sacred Valley) thanks to its position on a hill at 828 mt of altitude and at the feet of the so called “Bella Dormiente” (Sleeping beauty), a group of 2 main mountains which may remind, when looking from a distance (especially coming from Ivrea, the nearest motorway exit to reach the place) a laying long haired lady.
In pre-Roman times, it was a settlement of the Salassi population (it seems that from their word “sala” – camp – is coming the name Sale, the administrative centre of Castelnuovo Nigra). It has been named Valle Sacra, due to the large number of churches and votive chapels which can be seen everywhere, or also Castelnuovo Valley, in ancient times, as feud of the San Martino di Castelnuovo family. The San Martino have been protagonists of the local history during the Middle Ages and were living in the castle which can still be seen in ruins in the Villa Castelnuovo suburb. Among such ruins, archaeologists found a marvellous large fresco which was restored and now can be seen at the Museo Archeologico del Canavese in Cuorgné representing “The Heroes of ancient times” by the medieval painter Giacomino da Ivrea.
Nearby the ruins of the medieval castle, it is located the 19th Century villa and garden of the Count Costantino Nigra, today needing deep restoration.
Costantino Nigra, our most famous fellow-citizen, has been one of the protagonist of the Italian Risorgimento (leading to our unification as a nation): being ambassador of the Sardenia Kingdom at the French royal court he greatly cooperated with the Count of Cavour to create the alliance with France which facilitated the creation of the Italian Kingdom in 1861.
The lovely natural environment surrounding Castelnuovo Nigra is the ideal scenario for walking (several nice path are available), biking, horse riding. In winter time, it is nice walking with the snow rackets and enjoying the enchanting views overlooking all the Canavese region, from Biella area down to Turin and westward to the Gran Paradiso mountains which are really close to us. Both main paved and winding roads reaching the village are an excellent itinerary to test your bike, your car or motorcicle. This year the «Bella Dormiente Skyrace» took place in our mountains, a competitive and challenging race which attracted many amateur and professional mountain foot runners. We have plenty of paths which are very suitable for mountain off-road bikers as well as motorcyclists.
