สิ่งอื่นที่ควรรู้
KEYS
The gate at pavement level isn't locked.
Up the steps to the front door, only the lower of the 2 locks is used. This is the key with blue paint on it.
The 2 keys to Apt 302 have red paint on them and are both deadlocks, not latch locks - you cant slam them to lock the door. When you get in you have to lock again from the inside. If you use the lower of the two locks you can leave that key in the lock, and people outside can still get in using their own key.

RUBBISH.
Branca generally leaves small bags inside the public litter (colour orange) bin on the lamppost near the front door. I am not sure that this is kosher but they seem to disappear. The days when rubbish is collected are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The rubbish can be left in front of a light pole in front of the building. Please make sure the bags are well closed.

GAS
The supply to the cooker and to the water heater in the bathroom comes via a pipe with a yellow tap. This has to be in line with the pipe for the gas to flow, at right angles it closes the supply - as is normal in most places.
For hot water in the bathroom: there is a small rocker switch on the side of the water heater and the top half needs to be depressed. The 2 dials on the front need to be approx 6 o’clock - in fact leave them as they are. Open the hot tap (left) in the shower stall fully, you should hear a mild woomph as the gas in the burner ignites, and when the shower runs hot, open the cold tap to make the temperature bearable. If you can’t get ignition at all, it may b because the batteries have run out. They live in a little chamber that projects slightly on the underside of the boiler. You flick a catch to open the door. It needs the biggish torch batteries, Esteves may have them.
The bathroom sink operates the same way but the kitchen sink is not connected to the gas boiler.

BLOCKED SINKS
The sinks block quite easily but this can be remedied by 1) taking out the little strainer and giving it a squirt with the shower douche, 2) brisk use of the Plumber’s Friend (a plunger) which has a blue handle and lives in the service loo.

DRINKING WATER
Use water from the terra cotta cooler near the sink. You have to open the tap above it and fill it up regularly. Use the Sagatiba bottles to store cold water in the fridge.

COOKING
The cooker has an automatic ignition if you press the star button while opening one of the gas taps. It will also ignite the oven part, although you have to hold the oven button in for some time and check the burners are going. The upper shelf in the oven has a Siamese twin relationship with the other and it is best to unhook it at the back and make them independent.
The pots with twin handles get mighty hot so beware. Use the one with the long handle first. The frying pan burns easily but aint bad at cooking steak. At current January prices we get a piece of File Mignon for about R$30 a kilo and slice it up at home. Use the red handled knife which takes a good edge if you use the sharpener.

SHOPPING
Esteves is a shop in the building where one can get basic food, cleaning materials, beer, etc. Their fresh rolls are OK and they do salami and ham too.
There is a reasonable supermarket a short stiff walk away, following these directions:
Rua Aurea continues steeply up the hill past the church opposite the east windows of the flat. Go up here and at the very top cross the tram tracks and there is a Rede Economia up on the right. (It used to be the Maracana) new, quite good, fresh meat fruit & veg and clean. Carrying stuff downhill aint too bad.

On Fridays there is a street market in Teresina Street quite close, if you go up the road on the left hand side of the health centre - which is bang opposite you looking out of the east windows.

AIR CON
If it is warm, the ceiling fans should provide enough coolness. Note that the fans go in both directions and one of these provides more down force.
If it gets HOT you can use the aircon, but it is expensive on juice. You must not use it with the windows open as this is counterproductive and in the sitting room you need to close the kitchen door too. The R/H switch on each Springer unit has 4 positions, from the top: off, fan only, mild blow, hard blow. The flat vertical panel on either side of the unit can be opened to direct the airflow. Don't run the aircon if it is hidden behind a curtain cos then the benefit is lost.

TV
The aerial man ‘antennisto’ is Jose Pereira, his home number is (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , his mobile is (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) .

LAUNDRY
There is a blue handbill in the table drawer for a laundry service in Flamengo.

GETTING UPHILL.
It’s an uphill sweat from Gloria to Sta Teresa and a taxi currently costs R$10 from Rua de Gloria, which is a bargain unless you want ski jumpers’ thighs. Make sure you get the taxi just before Rua Candido Mendeso he can turn right into it, otherwise it’s a long detour. Not all taxi drivers appreciate the cobbled streets of Santa T. so it’s best to talk football en route.

BARS
Sta Teresa can get very busy so you may like to try the more tipico bars in Lapa. Take the 14 bus from outside the health centre downhill beyond Gloria and get off at the junction with Rua Lavradio. I liked the Bar Belmonte which has 2 sports TVs and a great view of street life. Prices in Copacabana & Ipanema are likely to go through the roof.

METRO
Any trip currently costs R$3.80 and you can buy a rechargeable plastic card for the Metro and put R$10, 20 or 30 on it and just show it to the machine on the way in, like an Oyster. Parts of the Metro which have not been built yet are served by Metro buses and they sell a combined ticket at R$3.80 which gives you a Metro bus + Metro train ride, provided they are less than 1 hour apart. Buy it on the bus or in the Metro station. This should get you from Gloria to Leblon for R$3.80 -

It is a very bohemian area with great cafes, bars with live music, a supermarket within a 10 minute walk, a street market with fruits, vegetables,
fish, flowers, etc. The flat is very near the last stop of the Bondinho (street car of Santa Teresa). Public transport opposite the building.
