Unique Cultural Day of Dead in Mixquic with locals
Experience the Day of the Dead with a local guide native to Mixquic. We will explore the remains of the chinampas, visit some families & their ofrendas, explore the cemetery and tzompantli, and enjoy a delicious hot chocolate and pan de muerto with a local family near the centre of Mixquic.
Mi lengua natal es español.
----
On the 1st we’ll go to the cemetery & tzompantli. Then we will take part in the campanero - a wonderful tradition where several people meet, especially the youngest, to make a tour of various "ofrendas" in different homes within the town. Upon reaching their homes, the "bell ringers" offer prayers to the deceased of the visited family, and in exchange, the family provides them with food and fruits from the offering.
On the 2nd, will go to the cemetery and tzompantli, and later visit some houses to see how they elaborate their ofrendas. Then we will enjoy some complimentary hot chocolate and "pan de muerto" with a family. Finally, we will return to the cemetery to witness the famous alumbrado.
We will all get some flowers and candles and I'll guide you to my family’s graveyard. We will decorate the graveyard with flowers and candles and if you want we can spend some time around the tomb performing some loving prayers to my family.
There we will also have the chance to chat with some other people from the local community that take part in the alumbrado.
