This fortress guards the entrance to the bay of Cartagena, it is only accessible by boat. If you have rented one for the day, this is a great place to stop on your way to Barú or Las Islas del Rosario.

The Castle of San Luis de Bocachica, was a military fortress that defended Cartagena, Colombia. The Spanish built it in the 17th century. After it suffered war damage in the 18th century, they erected a new coastal fortification, the Castle of San Fernando on the same site. The site on the Island of Tierra Bomba controlled deep-water access to Cartagena's harbour by the channel of Bocachica (or "small entrance" as opposed to Bocagrande, the "big entrance").

Together with Old town and San Felipe Castle it is how the Spanish used the forts and ocean to fend off invaders, the British and Pirates. It is located on the island of Tierra bomba at one end of Canal de Bocachica. The passage through the canal was restricted by combining forces with the Battery of San José. Its construction began in 1753. In a bizarre, it is one of the most striking among the strengths of Cartagena de Indias. It was also a prison for its safe location and isolation from the mainland.
