Bad Ischl's own mountain - Mt Katrin is well worth a visit, with several hiking and climbing routes on the summit, as well as stunning views! The quaint 60yr old cable car that takes you up, gives wonderful views back over Bad Ischl as you ascend and is an experience in itself.

Since 1959 visitors to Bad Ischl have been able to take the cable car up the Katrin mountain to 1,400 meters. The trip on the charming 4-person cable car takes approximately 15 minutes. Alternatively you can walk to the top of the mountain along various routes from the valley. The walks to the top can take in excess of 2 ½ hours. There is a restaurant (Katrin Berggasthof) as you get out of the cable car, or you can take the short walk down to the cafe (Katrin Almhütte). The Katrin mountain is a nature reserve and there are many marked trails and hikes you can make from the cable car station, and good walking shoes/boots are recommended for these walks

Superb views over the Hallstättersee (Lake Hallstatt) and the surrounding mountains. The guesthouse at the top station of the cable car serves good food in an amazing setting, while the Katrin Almhutte, just a few yards further, is more traditional. It also serves excellent food on the terrace with stunning views.
