Great regional museum with global reach. New exhibitions and recently refurbished set in beautiful Museum Gardens that run down to the riverside.

It's got a fantastic collection of local artefacts - there is a recreated Victorian street with brilliant attention to detail even down to the sounds of the time. The prison where they held Dick Turpin is also gruesomely good.....

It's the best museum in York - some really good objects and an overview of the history of the city. Much better than the Castle Museum. Also the Museum Gardens are lovely and contain the ruins of an old abbey.
