The 19th century church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is a fortified church standing on the line of Hadrian's Wall, and is unique in having had two fortified towers (one of which has been converted into a vestry)

The church dates around 12th Century, constructed from stones taken from Hadrian's Wall. Fortified and used as shelter during border skirmishes. Was the resting place for Edward 1 who died on Burgh Marshes and rested her briefly before being taken to his final resting place.
